Sam Johnson Pushes for Inclusion of Local Players in Final AFCON Matches.
Former Black Stars player, Sam Johnson has suggested that some local players should be included in the Black Stars for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.
The Black Stars will lock horns with Angola in Luanda before playing the final qualifying game against Niger at the Accra sports stadium.
The four-time African champions have been unimpressive in their AFCON qualifying series as the have just two points from four games. A defeat for Ghana means Ghana will not feature in the AFCON slated for Morocco.
Speaking to Graphic Sports, the former Hearts of Oak left-back believes this is an opportunity to give some home-based players playing time in the Black Stars.
“I really want the local guys to go and play in these last AFCON matches,” Johnson told Graphic Sports. “We could bring in local players and add a few foreign-based ones to give them exposure. It will help build their confidence and morale.” He said.
However, he added that it will be difficult for local players to get included in the Black Stars because of the low standard of the Ghana Premier League.
“The question is, which of these players would you invite? Based on what I’ve seen, I’m not confident. Our league’s standard is low, and you can’t call up these players if we want to avoid heavy losses.” He added.
Head Coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad for the crucial encounters in the coming days.
