President Mahama Announces Dedicated Sports Development Fund During Black Queens Visit
President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans by the government to establish a dedicated fund for sports development in Ghana, aimed at addressing the long-standing challenges of financing national teams and supporting grassroots talent.
The announcement was made during the Black Queens’ courtesy visit to the Jubilee House, where they were celebrated for their bronze medal triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama highlighted the need for a sustainable approach to sports financing, comparing the proposed fund to the School Feeding Programme, which was successfully secured during his previous administration.
“We’ll work to get dedicated funding for sports so that the issue of financing and teams traveling and getting their paydiums and all that will be a thing of the past,” he assured.
The proposed fund is expected to serve as a reliable resource to cater to the financial needs of all national teams, improve training conditions, and support broader sporting infrastructure and capacity building.
President Mahama’s announcement comes at a time when calls for increased investment in women’s football and other sporting disciplines have intensified following the Black Queens’ impressive display at WAFCON 2024 — their best performance since 2016.
