Black Queens centre-back Josephine Bonsu has revealed that representing Ghana at the international level is her way of honouring her father, describing the experience as both emotional and deeply fulfilling.

The German-born defender has quickly established herself as a key figure in Kim Björkegren’s squad, helping Ghana to a bronze medal finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and playing a pivotal role in the team’s qualification for the 2026 edition of the tournament.

The Black Queens sealed their qualification in style with a 7-0 aggregate win over Egypt, capped by a commanding 4-0 victory at the Accra Sports Stadium last week. Bonsu featured in both legs, delivering solid defensive performances that underlined her importance to the team’s setup.

Speaking after the match, Bonsu expressed how much wearing the Ghana jersey means to her personally.

“It’s a dream to play for the national team. I’m just giving back to my father, playing for the national team. It means a lot,” she said.

The 26-year-old admitted that playing in front of Ghanaian fans for the first time was an unforgettable moment — one that left her in awe of the passion and energy that surrounded the team.

“When I was walking through the tunnel and saw the fans, I was like, is this even real life? It was so loud. The atmosphere was just outstanding, and even in the middle of the game, I found myself looking around and enjoying it. This is just a dream.”

Her words captured the emotional significance of representing Ghana — not just as a footballer, but as a daughter fulfilling a family legacy.
