“Men’s Football in Ghana is Failing”- George Afriyie
Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has delivered a blunt assessment of the current state of men’s football in the country, describing it as deeply concerning and in decline.
His comments come at a time when the Ghanaian men’s national teams are facing widespread criticism for underwhelming performances on the continental and global stages. Ghana failed to qualify for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), will not participate in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and was absent from both the U17 and U20 FIFA World Cups.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s women’s teams have made notable strides, with the Black Queens winning bronze at the just ended 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and improving in international rankings — a development Afriyie believes is shielding Ghana from total footballing disgrace.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, Afriyie lamented Ghana’s absence from major international tournaments and stressed that only the women’s game is providing any form of national pride at the moment.
“Men’s football in Ghana is failing. Currently Ghana is not at the CHAN tournament. Ghana will not be at the AFCON. Ghana was not part of the U17 and U20 World Cups. The only thing keeping us from complete embarrassment is the women’s football,” he said.
Afriyie’s remarks reflect growing discontent among football stakeholders and fans, as pressure mounts on the current GFA leadership to restore the glory of Ghanaian men’s football.
