Ghanaian midfielder Kwasi Sibo has achieved a major career milestone after helping Real Oviedo secure promotion to the Spanish La Liga following a dramatic 3-2 aggregate win over CD Mirandés in the playoff finals on Saturday evening.
Sibo was pivotal in Oviedo’s extra-time victory, playing the full 120 minutes and commanding the midfield with composure and grit. His energy and presence were instrumental in sealing the return of the Blue and Whites to Spain’s top flight for the first time in over two decades.
The 26-year-old enjoyed an impressive debut season with Real Oviedo, having joined the club on a free transfer from SD Amorebieta ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. Despite a modest return of one goal and one assist in 34 league appearances, Sibo’s work rate, tactical discipline, and defensive contributions made him a key figure in the team’s success.
He also featured in all four of Real Oviedo’s La Liga promotion playoff matches, underlining his status as a trusted figure in the team’s midfield engine room.
Sibo’s current contract with Oviedo runs until the summer of 2026, and he is expected to play a vital role in their campaign in the top flight next season.
The midfielder began his football journey with Ghana’s Cheetah FC before moving abroad in 2017. He had stints with Armenian side Banants FC and was later signed by English Championship side Watford FC on a three-and-a-half-year deal. However, Sibo never made a senior appearance for Watford and was sent on loan spells to Albania’s KF Skënderbeu and Spain’s UD Ibiza.
In 2021, he signed for the Real Betis B team, continuing his development in the Spanish system before finally finding stability and success with Real Oviedo.
Now poised to play in La Liga, Kwasi Sibo will be flying the Ghanaian flag on one of football’s biggest stages in the 2025/26 season.
