Abdul Karim Zito has opened up on his departure from Asante Kotoko, revealing that club officials attempted to convince him to reconsider his resignation, but he had already resolved to step aside.

The Porcupine Warriors confirmed Zito’s exit on Monday evening, just a day after the club suffered elimination from the MTN FA Cup. His departure brings an end to a brief but eventful spell that began in April last year, highlighted by an FA Cup triumph at the end of his first season in charge.

Reflecting on his decision, Zito explained that discussions with the club were extensive but ultimately led to a mutual agreement.

“It became a family issue, and we had to talk it out and find an amicable solution. In the end, we all agreed that I should leave,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM.

The former Dreams FC coach admitted Kotoko’s hierarchy tried to persuade him to continue but insisted his mind was already made up.

“They did their best to change my mind, but my mind was already made up. I am a legend of the club, and if an issue arises, you need to remain calm and talk things out. I have resigned,” Zito stated.

Despite the turbulence of the current campaign, Zito expressed satisfaction with his achievements, pointing to the silverware he delivered during his tenure.

“I have been on the job for barely a year, and I won four trophies. I am very happy about it,” he added.

With Zito’s departure confirmed, Kotoko have placed assistant coaches Prince Yaw Osei and Hamza Obeng in temporary charge as they prepare for the highly anticipated Super Clash against Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League.
