Kim Bjorkegren Sets Sights on WAFCON Glory as Black Queens Open Training Camp
Head coach of Ghana’s senior women’s national team, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, has revealed his strong ambition to guide the Black Queens to their first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, as the team opens a crucial training camp in preparation for the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
The Swedish tactician has invited 31 players—24 of whom are home-based—for a nine-day training camp at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram. The camp is aimed at evaluating local talent and fine-tuning strategies ahead of the continental competition in July.
Speaking to 3 Sports, Coach Bjorkegren emphasized the importance of the camp in assessing new talent and building a competitive squad.
“For me, to see all the players in Ghana is impossible. When I am here, I maybe have the chance to watch one game at 3pm. But if there are no more games later, I can’t see all the players. So this was a great chance for me to bring many players to get to know them on and off the pitch,” he explained.
Ghana returns to the WAFCON stage for the first time since 2018 and has been drawn into a challenging group featuring reigning champions South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali.
Despite acknowledging the strength of their group, Bjorkegren remains optimistic about Ghana’s prospects in the tournament.
“For me, it is simple to win the gold medal. You need to take it step by step and I know we are not going to be a favorite for people outside of Ghana. There are some five nations who have a bigger chance to win it. We need to qualify from the group stage. From there, it’s three games and I know we can do it,” he said.
The Black Queens, three-time runners-up, are eager to make a strong impression in Morocco and finally clinch a long-awaited continental title under Bjorkegren’s leadership. The ongoing camp is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping a formidable squad capable of challenging Africa’s elite in July.
