Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has showered praise on team captain Portia Boakye, describing her as an irreplaceable figure and a key pillar in his tenure as Ghana’s women’s national team manager.

Boakye, one of the most experienced members of the current Black Queens setup, has been instrumental in guiding a youthful side that continues to grow under the Swedish tactician. The defender, who recently joined TP Mazembe in the Democratic Republic of Congo, also captained Ghana to a bronze medal finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Joy Sports, Coach Bjorkegren openly acknowledged Boakye’s leadership qualities and immense contributions both on and off the pitch.

“She (Portia Boakye) is great. I couldn’t do it without her, I’m honest with that,” Bjorkegren said.
“She’s leading the team off the pitch, especially on the pitch as well. The job she is doing off the pitch when the cameras are not there is great. I am super happy to have her as a captain. She deserves the best.”

Since his appointment earlier this year, Bjorkegren has relied heavily on Boakye’s experience to build a cohesive and competitive team, emphasizing her role in mentoring younger players and maintaining unity within the squad.

Boakye’s influence extends beyond leadership—her versatility and consistency have made her a crucial part of Ghana’s defensive setup. With her wealth of international experience, she remains focused on helping the Black Queens qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil and improving on their third-place finish at the 2024 WAFCON.

Under Bjorkegren’s guidance, and with Boakye’s leadership, Ghana’s women’s football continues to show steady progress as they prepare for another continental challenge at the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco.
