Head coach of Asante Kotoko, Abdul Karim Zito, has acknowledged the significant impact of striker Kwame Opoku’s absence during their goalless draw against Bibiani Gold Stars in Week 32 of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League.

The Porcupine Warriors were unable to find the back of the net in the away fixture on Sunday, with Opoku missing from the squad after travelling to England to join the Black Stars camp for the upcoming Unity Cup.

Opoku, who has been one of Kotoko’s standout performers this season with nine goals, was sorely missed in a match that saw Kotoko create chances but lack the cutting edge in front of goal.

Speaking after the match, Coach Zito admitted the striker’s absence was felt.
“I missed one of my best players, so definitely, he being absent in this game has affected me,” he stated. “I wish he was here with us, but I can’t stop him from progressing in his life as a footballer. I bear no grudge against him. I want him to go there and play better. Yes, I miss him, but I don’t regret him going.”

Despite the setback, Kotoko remain mathematically in contention for the league title, though their chances now depend on results elsewhere. With two matches left to play, the Reds will need both Nations FC and Gold Stars to drop points in their remaining games to stand any realistic chance of lifting the trophy.

The result leaves Kotoko with a challenging path ahead as they aim to finish the season strongly and capitalise on any slips by their rivals.
