Ghana’s Sports Minister Mourns Tragic Passing of Nigerian Boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed profound grief following the untimely passing of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun, who collapsed during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on Saturday night.

In an emotional statement, Adams extended heartfelt condolences to the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), the Nigerian boxing fraternity, and the global boxing community, describing Oluwasegun’s death as a tragic loss to the sport.

The 40-year-old fighter was competing in an undercard bout of Ghana’s Professional Boxing League against Accra-born John Mbanugu, popularly known as “Power,” when disaster struck.

Midway through the fight, Oluwasegun collapsed in the ring, prompting immediate medical attention. Despite swift intervention, he remained unresponsive and was rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident has cast a somber shadow over the boxing community, sparking conversations about medical preparedness and safety protocols in the sport.
