Ghana has taken a major step toward staging one of Africa’s flagship sporting events after formally confirming its role as host of the 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships.

The confirmation came after the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Iddie Adam, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the Government of Ghana with the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and Ghana Athletics. The agreement officially hands Ghana the responsibility of hosting the continental championship, which will run from May 12 to May 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon.

The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation conference room in Accra, attracted a distinguished delegation from the CAA. The group was led by CAA President Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Lamine Fati, alongside a CAA Region Two delegation headed by Chief Tonobok Okowa.

Ghana Athletics was represented by its President, Mr. Bawah Fuseini, while other key stakeholders present included officials from the Ghana Olympic Committee, led by Lawyer Richard Akakpovie, and the National Sports Authority, represented by Deputy Director General (Technical) Madam Victoria Commey. Their presence underscored a shared national commitment to delivering a successful championship.

By appending their signatures to the MoU, the CAA, Ghana Athletics, and the Government of Ghana have formally cemented Ghana’s acceptance of the hosting mandate and its obligation to meet all organisational and technical requirements for the event.

Earlier in the day, delegations from both the CAA and Ghana Athletics paid courtesy visits to major institutions involved in the preparations, including the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Olympic Committee, and the University of Ghana Sports Directorate. These engagements formed part of broader coordination efforts ahead of the 2026 championship.

The African Senior Athletics Championships are expected to draw elite athletes from across the continent, and hosting the event is anticipated to further strengthen Ghana’s standing as a trusted destination for high-profile international sporting competitions.
