Ghana Premier League Clubs Unite Against Hooliganism, Commit to Enhanced Security Measures
The 18 clubs of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) have issued a united statement condemning the recent crowd violence that marred the match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko SC.
The incident, which tragically claimed the life of a loyal Kotoko supporter, Francis Nana Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley, has sparked widespread outrage across the football community.
In the statement released after a meeting with the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Thursday, February 6, 2025, the GPL clubs strongly denounced all forms of hooliganism and violence, emphasizing their commitment to promoting fair play, respect, and sportsmanship.
The GPL clubs expressed their solidarity with the bereaved family and the Asante Kotoko fraternity, extending their deepest condolences. They pledged to work closely with the GFA, security agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure that those responsible for these criminal acts are identified and brought to justice.
During the meeting, the clubs unanimously agreed on the implementation of enhanced matchday security protocols. These measures aim to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of fans, players, and officials. A comprehensive set of guidelines is expected to be published following an Executive Council meeting scheduled for Friday, February 7, 2025.
The clubs reiterated their commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable environment for all football stakeholders.
“As GPL clubs, we are determined to ensure that our beautiful game is free from violence and intimidation. Together, we can create a football environment where fans can enjoy matches in peace and safety,” the statement stated.
This united front by the GPL clubs underscores the importance of collaboration and decisive action in addressing the challenges facing Ghanaian football.
