Ghana Drop in Latest FIFA Rankings Following Austria and Germany Defeats

The Black Stars have dropped in the latest FIFA rankings released on April 1, underlining concerns over the team’s recent form ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Ghana have fallen two places from their previous position of 72nd globally, extending a run of inconsistent results on the international stage. Despite the drop, they remain 14th in Africa according to the Confederation of African Football standings.

The decline follows a difficult international break in Europe, where Ghana suffered back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany. A heavy 5-1 loss in Vienna was followed by a narrow 2-1 defeat in Stuttgart, raising further doubts about the team’s readiness for the global tournament.

As a result, Ghana now head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the lowest-ranked side in Group L. They are set to face strong opposition in England, Croatia, and Panama.

The recent downturn has already triggered major changes within the team’s setup, including the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo, as the Ghana Football Association moves to appoint a new manager ahead of the tournament.

Attention now turns to the next phase of preparations, with friendly matches scheduled against Mexico and Wales in the coming months.

Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 18, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 28, in what promises to be a challenging group stage for the four-time African champions.
