Ghana Cycling Federation Laments Lack of Support

General Secretary of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Shaaban Mohammed, has expressed concern over the limited support the sport continues to receive from the state despite its rising profile and strong performances in both local and international competitions.

His comments come in the buildup to the 2025 Tour du Ghana, scheduled for November, a major cycling event on the country’s sporting calendar. This year’s edition promises to be the most competitive yet, with international participation set to raise the stakes and visibility of the event.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Sportsnite, Shaaban highlighted the growing momentum of cycling in Ghana and Africa but lamented that the sport still struggles to gain the recognition and resources it needs to thrive.

“Despite the growing popularity of cycling and performance in competitions in Ghana and Africa, the sport still lacks the attention it deserves. The Ghana Cycling Federation is one of the federations that get little from the state,” he said.

Shaaban revealed that Belgium, the USA, and the Netherlands are among the European countries confirmed to participate, with more expected to follow. Their involvement, he noted, reflects growing global interest in Ghana’s cycling scene.

However, the General Secretary stressed that without adequate investment, the potential impact of such tournaments on local development would remain limited.

He called on the government and corporate bodies to channel more resources into cycling, not only to support the Tour du Ghana but also to improve training facilities, rider welfare, and youth development initiatives across the country.
