The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has unveiled a new salary structure that guarantees players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) a minimum monthly net wage of GHS 1,500, marking a major step towards professionalising the local game and safeguarding player welfare.

The policy, which also extends to the Division One League and the Women’s Premier League, was reached after extensive consultations with clubs and formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG).

As part of the agreement, a standard contract template has also been introduced to ensure greater consistency and protection in player contracts. Under the new framework, Division One and Women’s Premier League players will receive a minimum monthly net salary of GHS 700.

The new salaries will apply to all contracts signed in the upcoming registration window, while players already tied to existing contracts will benefit from the changes beginning with the 2026/27 league season.

Describing the initiative as a historic milestone for Ghanaian football, GFA President Kurt Okraku said the reforms underscore the association’s commitment to fairness and professionalism.

“This decision reflects our firm commitment to protecting the welfare of our footballers and ensuring they are rewarded fairly for their talent and hard work.

By introducing minimum salaries, we are raising standards in our leagues, strengthening the value of the Ghanaian game, and creating a more professional and sustainable future for our players and clubs alike,” Okraku said.

The GFA believes that the reform will not only improve the livelihood of footballers but also help retain local talent, make the domestic leagues more attractive, and enhance overall competitiveness in Ghanaian football.
