Elmina Sharks Player Jay Asamoah Charged for Assaulting Referee in Division One League Match
Jay Asamoah, a player for Elmina Sharks, has been charged by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for breaching Section 13(1)(k) of the GFA’s Disciplinary Code during a Division One League match against Swedru All Blacks on Sunday.
The charge stems from an incident where Asamoah allegedly attempted to assault referee Eso Doh Morrison after the match, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Elmina Sharks.
A video circulating on social media shows Asamoah picking up a stone and attempting to strike referee Morrison near the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms. The confrontation occurred as the referee was being escorted off the pitch by security personnel.
The Division One League match between Elmina Sharks and Swedru All Blacks ended in chaos, with some Sharks players and officials attacking the referee over a disputed penalty decision.

Despite efforts by police officers and an unidentified man to protect Morrison, Asamoah managed to swing the stone in the referee’s direction, though he was prevented from making direct contact.
The GFA has given the player until Tuesday, February 18, 2025, to respond to the charge.
This incident has sparked widespread condemnation within the Ghanaian football community, with many calling for stricter measures to ensure the safety of match officials and curb violence at match venues.
