Black Stars Technical Advisor Winfried Schäfer Arrives in Ghana for World Cup Qualifiers
Newly appointed Black Stars technical advisor, Winfried Schäfer, has arrived in Ghana as the team ramps up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The seasoned German tactician, known for guiding Cameroon to AFCON glory in 2002, landed in Ghana on Monday, where he was received by Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei.
Schäfer’s appointment is part of the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) efforts to bolster the national team’s technical department, following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—the first time in two decades.
The 74-year-old coach will work closely with head coach Otto Addo, providing strategic guidance as Ghana aims to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Beyond his advisory duties with the Black Stars, Schäfer will also take on the role of technical director of the GFA, bringing his vast managerial experience—spanning over 40 years—to help reshape Ghanaian football.
