Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, returned home to a jubilant reception at Kotoka International Airport on Monday, July 28, 2025, after clinching third place at the 2024 African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Queens secured the bronze medal by defeating South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. This marks Ghana’s first podium finish at the tournament since 2016.

Supporters began gathering as early as 4:00 am, flooding the arrival hall with national colours, songs, and dancing to celebrate the team’s achievement. Flags waved proudly as fans applauded the players and technical staff.

Officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), representatives of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and former national players were present to welcome the contingent.

This bronze medal ends an eight-year medal drought for Ghana at the continental level and is widely viewed as a key milestone in the team’s rebuilding phase under head coach Kim Lars Björkegren. It also signals renewed optimism for the continued growth of women’s football in the country.
