Asante Kotoko Secure 2-0 Victory Over Legon Cities to Reclaim Top Spot
Asante Kotoko marked their return to competitive football with a 2-0 win over Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Stadium, reclaiming their place at the top of the Ghana Premier League.
The Porcupine Warriors are now level on points with Bibiani GoldStars, but they edge the standings due to a superior head-to-head record.
Before kickoff, the match was preceded by a touching tribute to Nana Pooley, the devoted Kotoko supporter who tragically lost his life in an act of hooliganism. Players and fans observed a minute’s silence, while the Kotoko team displayed a banner in his honour.
Despite going over a month without competitive action following the league’s suspension, Kotoko showed no signs of rust. They took control of the game from the outset, dictating play with confidence.
Their breakthrough came in the 29th minute when Patrick Asiedu fired a stunning strike from the edge of the box, curling the ball into the bottom left corner to leave the Legon Cities goalkeeper helpless.
While Kotoko continued to press forward, they had to wait until the 87th minute to seal the victory. Kwame Opoku won a penalty and stepped up to convert it, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to double their advantage.
The victory sees Kotoko reclaim first place in the league standings, while Legon Cities remain in the relegation zone, still battling to find form and consistency.
