Ghana has reached a significant milestone in para sports after swimmer Promise Wonder Atsu Aheto secured the nation’s first-ever qualification in para swimming for the Commonwealth Games.

The groundbreaking achievement will see Aheto represent Ghana at the 2026 edition of the Games in Glasgow, scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2.

Aheto earned his place through a bipartite allocation after undergoing classification and delivering strong performances at the World Para Swimming Series held in Australia earlier this year.

At the competition, he clocked personal best times of 1:38.58 in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke S9 and 31.72 in the Men’s 50m Freestyle S13, results that qualified him to compete in either event at the Games.

“This landmark achievement represents a major milestone for Ghana Para Sports,” the statement noted, emphasizing the progress being made in developing para sports across the country.

The accomplishment has been widely celebrated as a reflection of growing institutional backing and collaboration within Ghana’s sporting ecosystem. Key figures, including Richard Akpokavie, Farida Ayishatu Idriss, and Samson Deen, were acknowledged for their contributions.

Their combined administrative and financial support during the competition in Australia proved vital in ensuring Aheto’s successful qualification.

With this historic breakthrough, Ghana Para Sports has reiterated its commitment to nurturing athletes with disabilities and providing them with opportunities to excel on the global stage, as the nation prepares to make a meaningful impact at the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
