Otto Addo Urges Caution and Humility Despite Ghana’s Strong Start to World Cup Qualifiers
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has called for calm and humility following Ghana’s impressive start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, stressing that qualification is far from guaranteed despite the optimism surrounding the team.
Ghana secured crucial back-to-back victories over Chad and Madagascar in March, results that lifted the four-time African champions to the top of Group I, three points ahead of second-placed Comoros, with four matches still to play.
The wins have sparked renewed confidence among Ghanaians, many of whom believe the national team is on course for a second consecutive World Cup appearance after competing in Qatar in 2022.
But speaking to the official website of the Ghana Football Association (ghanafa.org), Otto Addo maintained that there is still a lot of work to be done before the team can dream of qualification.
“It’s always easier to work when you win. But on the other hand, we have to stay humble. We have to keep on working,” Addo said.
“If anybody thinks we are already at the World Cup, I can guarantee you, it’s not like that. I have seen too many things in football, and we really, really have to work hard to fulfil our aim.”
Addo’s comments come in the wake of a mixed international window in May, where Ghana suffered a narrow defeat to Nigeria but bounced back with a victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the Unity Cup held in London.
Despite the recent dip in friendly results, the team’s focus remains firmly on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Ghana will be aiming to make their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup after previously featuring in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022.
