Member of Parliament for Akuapem South, Hon. Lawrencia Dziwornu, has called for presidential and parliamentary recognition for Ghanaian high jumper Rose Yeboah after her historic showing at the World Athletics Championships.

Yeboah, making her debut at the global event, became the first Ghanaian athlete in 20 years to reach the final of an individual event, finishing 15th in the Women’s High Jump final.

Her performance has been hailed as a significant milestone for Ghanaian athletics, particularly women in sports.

Hon. Dziwornu, who also serves on Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, praised the 22-year-old athlete for her resilience and urged the state to give her the same level of recognition accorded to the Black Queens following their bronze medal win at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

“Rose Yeboah’s achievement is historic and inspirational. To be the first Ghanaian in two decades to contest in an individual final at the World Championships deserves national recognition. I believe both Parliament and the Presidency must honour her for the pride she has brought to our nation,” Hon. Dziwornu said.

The legislator further applauded the performance of Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team of Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, Ibrahim Fuseini, and Rashid Saminu, who placed 4th in the final after clocking a new national record of 37.79 seconds. Though they narrowly missed a podium finish by 0.04 seconds, their achievement was described as “proof of Ghana’s potential” on the global stage.

Hon. Dziwornu linked the athletes’ performances to the importance of investing in sports development, stressing the need for a sustainable funding model to support athletes from grassroots to elite level.

“These athletes have carried the Ghanaian spirit of resilience and excellence onto the world stage. Their success shows that with proper investment, talent identification, and preparation, Ghana can achieve even greater milestones,” she said, while pledging her support for the soon-to-be introduced Sports Fund Bill which seeks to finance talent development and international competition.

Hon. Dziwornu concluded by urging Ghanaians to celebrate the athletes while pushing for policies that ensure long-term sporting excellence.
