GoldStars Depart for Algeria Ahead of Crucial CAF Champions League Showdown with JS Kabylie
Ghanaian champions Bibiani GoldStars have departed for North Africa as they gear up for their make-or-break CAF Champions League preliminary round second-leg fixture against Algerian powerhouse JS Kabylie on Sunday.
The Miners, who are making their debut in Africa’s flagship inter-club competition, face an uphill task after suffering a 2-0 defeat in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium. Despite showing determination on home soil, defensive errors proved costly, leaving their qualification hopes under serious threat.
The 42-member delegation, comprising players, technical handlers, and management officials, set off from Accra on Thursday morning via Turkish Airlines. The travelling party will first make a stop in Istanbul before connecting to Algiers. To ensure smooth logistics, the squad has been split into two groups, with the second batch expected to join their teammates in Istanbul on Friday.
On arrival in Algeria, GoldStars will continue fine-tuning their preparations and are scheduled to hold their official training session at the match venue on Saturday. Interim coach Nana Amankwah, who recently stepped in following the dismissal of Frimpong Maxwell, will lead the team from the sidelines.
GoldStars need nothing short of a heroic display to keep their continental campaign alive. The Ghanaian outfit must score at least two unanswered goals to push the tie into extra time, or even more impressively, stage a comeback win to progress outright.
Sunday’s encounter promises to be a stern test for the debutants, as they seek to write a new chapter in their young history on the African stage.
