Former Black Stars player and football legend, Ibrahim Sunday has lamented Ghana’s current struggles in international football, attributing the national team’s decline to a lack of foresight in player development and succession planning.

Sunday’s remarks come in the wake of the Black Stars’ disappointing performances in recent competitions, including their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 1971 African Footballer of the Year criticized the country’s approach to team management, highlighting its failure to groom quality replacements during the team’s peak years.

“When the team was performing well, we did not look for quality players to replace. We did not prepare for our future, and that is why we are struggling now.” Ibrahim Sunday told Asempa FM.

“As a nation, we act as if we do not care,” Sunday observed. “But we need to take action and solve the problem.” He added.

Ibrahim Sunday participated in two African Cup of Nations tournament for Ghana in 1968 and 1970 where Ghana finished as runners up in both competitions.
