President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to Ghana’s private sector to invest in the Ghana Sports Fund, describing it as a strategic partnership opportunity rather than a charitable contribution.

The President made the call during a meeting with business leaders, where he addressed broader economic issues and underscored the growing role of sports in national development. He highlighted the fund, which was passed into law in late 2025, as a critical tool to drive sustainable financing for the country’s sports ecosystem.

“Sports today influences global markets, stories and media rights, youth employment, creative industry and investment flows,” Mahama said.

“Our National Football Team, Black Stars, is preparing for its fifth FIFA World Cup appearance. Our Women’s Soccer team, the Black Queens, heads into continental competition with renewed credibility.”

He explained that the Ghana Sports Fund was established to provide transparent and structured financing for grassroots development, school sports, athlete welfare, infrastructure upgrades, and long-term talent development pathways.

“We’ve therefore established the Ghana Sports Fund, a transparent financing framework for grassroots, development, school sports, athlete welfare, infrastructure modernization, and long-term talent pathways,” he added.

The President stressed that sustained sporting success requires deliberate and well-funded systems, urging corporate entities to see the initiative as an investment in national progress.

“No country achieves sporting excellence without deliberate funding systems. I invite corporate Ghana to view this, not as charity, but as a partnership in national development,” he said.

The appeal comes as Ghana intensifies efforts to strengthen its sports sector, with government and stakeholders seeking long-term private sector involvement to complement public funding and drive growth across multiple disciplines.
