GFA Spokesperson Explains Kwasi Sibo’s Omission from Black Stars Squad for World Cup Qualifiers
The Communication Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has provided clarity on why Real Oviedo midfielder Kwasi Sibo was not included in Ghana’s squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Sibo, 27, has made an impressive start to the new La Liga season, featuring in Oviedo’s opening matches against Villarreal and Real Madrid. Despite his strong form, the midfielder was absent from Otto Addo’s 24-man squad announced on Tuesday for the double-header against Chad and Mali next month.
The list saw the Derrick Kohn receive his first call-up but Sibo’s absence raised eyebrows among some supporters.
Explaining the decision, Asante Twum revealed that the technical team has been keeping close tabs on the player but opted to stick with the existing group of players that impressed in the last round of qualifiers.
“Kwasi Sibo will get his chance soon. The technical team has been monitoring him and is impressed with his work rate. Although they opted to maintain the core team following recent performances against Chad and Madagascar, Sibo is on their radar and will likely get an opportunity soon,” Asante Twum wrote on Facebook.
Sibo, who has yet to represent Ghana at any level, remains in contention for a future call-up as the Black Stars continue to shape their squad ahead of next year’s continental and global competitions.
The invited players are expected to report to camp on Monday, September 1, as Otto Addo begins preparations for the two crucial fixtures. Ghana will travel to N’Djamena to face Chad on Thursday, September 4, before returning to the Accra Sports Stadium to host Mali on Monday, September 8.
With victories in both matches, the Black Stars would secure their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
