Eddie Hearn Confirms Matchroom Boxing Event in Accra This December
Chairman of Matchroom Sport and world-renowned boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has officially announced that the promotional company will stage a major boxing event in Accra, Ghana, before the end of 2025.
The highly anticipated show is slated for December 20, 2025, and is expected to serve as a precursor to a potential Anthony Joshua fight in the Ghanaian capital in February 2026.
According to Ring Magazine, Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith visited Ghana in August to engage with local stakeholders about the logistics of the upcoming event. His visit reportedly left a strong impression, paving the way for Matchroom’s confirmation of the Accra show.
Hearn, in an interview with Ring Magazine, confirmed the development and provided some insight into the company’s plans.
“We’re doing a show in Ghana on December 20th. Obviously this will not be an AJ [Anthony Joshua] show but it’s still going to be a good show.”
He further explained that the December event will help the team better understand the environment and local dynamics before potentially staging a much bigger event involving Joshua next year.
“The idea is that this is probably a precursor for an AJ show out there but it’s not part of our initial deal. We can just get the lay of the land with this one,” Hearn stated.
Eddie Hearn has long been the promoter of former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, who recently visited Ghana as part of his efforts to connect with his African roots.
The December event will mark Matchroom Boxing’s first official show in West Africa, a move that could further strengthen the region’s growing influence on the global boxing scene.
