Black Satellites head coach Desmond Ofei has voiced optimism over the potential return of key forward Jerry Afriyie during the ongoing 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

Afriyie, who featured prominently in Ghana’s first two Group C matches against DR Congo and Senegal, returned to his club CD Lugo in Spain following a pre-arranged agreement between the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Spanish third-tier club.

Under the terms of the deal, the forward was permitted to represent Ghana in only the first two group-stage games of the tournament.

Speaking ahead of Ghana’s crucial final group clash against the Central African Republic, Coach Ofei acknowledged the impact Afriyie has had on the squad and expressed hope of having him back before the tournament ends.

“Jerry Afriyie is a true leader both on and off the field. He’s a fantastic talent and we knew it would be difficult to have him for the whole tournament,” Ofei said.

“Fortunately, we had him for two matches. We’ll try our best to bring him back at the right time. Hopefully, he won’t be away for long—we expect him back soon, and in his absence, we’ll continue to make him proud.”

The 20-year-old striker’s made his senior debut for Ghana earlier this year, scoring in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger, and later secured a loan move from Saudi Arabian club Al Qadsiah to CD Lugo.
