Ghana’s national U-20 women’s team, the Black Princesses, will take on Tunisia in the second round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers later this year, following the conclusion of first-round ties across Africa.

Ghana, having been exempted from the initial qualifying round, learned of their opponents after Tunisia edged Togo 3-2 on aggregate — winning 2-1 at home and drawing 1-1 away.

With preparations already underway at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, head coach Charles Sampson has expressed cautious optimism, stressing the importance of detailed analysis and strategic preparation ahead of the two-legged encounter.

“Now our focus has gone to the game between Tunisia because now we know our opponents,” Coach Sampson stated.

“I have watched the game that they played in Togo 1-1 and then home in Tunisia they won 2-1. It was a tight game too. So now we know how they also play. Now it’s about us to watch the game and analyze it well and see how we can prepare ourselves to be ahead of them in September.”

The experienced trainer revealed the team’s roadmap ahead of the tie, which includes two key training camps aimed at fine-tuning tactics and evaluating player options.

“We are looking forward to that. We have two camps planned in July and also early August before we meet Tunisia. So, we believe that in those times we will get the team polished. We’ve got some new players in this week just for us to try some positions that we are still looking for. So, we are still on the building aspect,” he explained.

Coach Sampson also emphasized his commitment to squad strengthening through active scouting and assessment of domestic talent.

“I’m also going around to watch some middle league games to scout to see if we can find some players for some roles that we are still looking for, so it’s positive. We are strengthening the team in every department that we think we are a bit lacking.”

The Black Princesses, who have made seven consecutive appearances at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, will play the first leg away in Tunisia before hosting the North Africans in Ghana for the return leg.

The winner over the two legs will progress to the next stage of the qualifiers as Ghana bids to secure another ticket to the global tournament.
