Fatawu Safiu smiles Trelleborgs

Asante Kotoko has ended Abdul Fatawu Safiu’s second stint with the club prematurely, citing medical reasons as the cause for terminating his contract.

Originally signed to a two-year deal, Safiu’s return to the team has been unexpectedly cut short, depriving him of the chance to demonstrate his talents on the field.

The forward, previously honoured as the best player and top scorer in the Normalization Committee’s special tournament in 2019, rejoined Asante Kotoko just last month after playing for Trelleborgs FF and FC Trollhättan in Sweden.

During his earlier tenure with Asante Kotoko in the 2018/2019 season, Safiu left a notable impression, appearing in 16 matches and scoring 13 goals, including memorable strikes in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Asante Kotoko released a statement outlining the circumstances leading to Safiu’s departure, clarifying that the decision to terminate his contract was based on medical concerns.

To comply with registration deadlines set by the Ghana Football Association, Safiu underwent a pre-competition medical assessment conducted by the club’s medical team. Unfortunately, undisclosed health issues emerged during the assessment, posing potential risks that could sideline Safiu for an extended period.

With the Ghana Football Association rejecting Safiu’s registration due to these concerns, Asante Kotoko chose to part ways with the player in the best interest of both parties.

While bidding farewell to Safiu, the club conveyed its best wishes for his future endeavours and assured him of his ongoing significance as a member of the Asante Kotoko family.

Despite Safiu’s abrupt departure, the club has left the possibility open for him to contribute in any capacity in the future.
