Thomas Partey EXIT Europa League with defeat to Sporting CP

Thomas Partey and his team, Arsenal FC were hoping to advance to the next stage of the 2022-23 UEFA Europa League but lost on penalties to Portuguese side Sporting CP on Thursday night in London.

Arsenal picked a 2-2 scoreline in the first leg played in Portugal but could not sail through to the quarter-finals after losing 5-3 on penalties at the Emirates stadium having failed to make use of 120 minutes of duration. 

Considering Arsenal’s brilliant form this season, taking a lead at the Emirates stadium in the 19th minute through Swiss International Granit Xhaka a win was near by but Sporting CP wouldn’t give up but level scores in the 62nd minute.

With Pedro Goncalves drawing parity, there was game at hand.

The Gunners despite introducing Thomas Partey, Bukayo Saka, Leonardo Trossard and Martin Odegaard could not score the much needed win to hand them qualification, with scores at 3-3 aggregate.

Partey’s 66th minute introduction for Jorginho was not enough to see game travel to extra time then on penalties with Sporting CP winning to advance with a 5-3 scoreline after Martinelli missed his kick.

Now, Ghana international Thomas Partey will have to turn attention to the English Premier League were at the moment Arsenal sit top as hope for a double this season is gone.

He exit the Europa League scene for compatriot Issahaku Abdul Fatawu who sat at bench throughout the game for Sporting CP on the night.
