Olympic Games: Former Ghana star Yaw Acheampong reveals why Ghana have failed to qualify for Olympic all this while
It’s being 19-years since Ghana last appeared at the Olympic, setting Africa’s record as first African country to win a medal[bronze] at the Olympic.
In 2004, at Athens Ghana showed up but fell short after losing 4-2 to Brazil in the quarter-finals. However, Ghana have made six appearance starting from 1962.
Having failed to impress at the TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana’s Olympic team are yet to return after 19-years. On Tuesday, they eliminated Algeria with a 2-1 aggregate scoreline following a 1-1 draw away and 1-0 win at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Ex-Ghana international, Yaw Acheampong has attributed the nation’s absence at the Olympic Games to lack of “patience and time” to build a team.
He was a member of the squad that won bronze – Ghana and Africa’s first ever Olympic medal in Barcelona 1992.
“I think time and patience is what we did not have, now that we have time and patience, we are about to witness a new generation of guys with a good performance.
“Patience in terms of team building, you know anytime we are going for a tournament, our target is to win the trophy.
“But we don’t plan well but I believe now everything is going well according to plan and I believe now that we have qualified to represent Ghana at the Africa level and looking at the team’s that have qualified, I’m very very sure that we can qualify for the next Olympic Games.” Yaw Acheampong told Radio Gold Sports.
