Late Ghanaian international Christian Atsu laid to rest

The 31-year-old late Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu on Friday was laid in state and given last respect before final burial.

Christian Atsu Twasam received a state burial on Friday, March 17, 2023 at the state House/fortcourt of Parliament Osu. His final funeral rite saw many dignitaries present including his wife Marie-Claire Rupio and three kids.

President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, Vice-President Mamud Bawumia, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif and Pastors were present to give their last respect to Atsu and ensure a befitting burial.

Former Black Stars players, Richard Kingston, Sulley Muntari, Yaw Preko, Dramani, John Paintsil, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, including his best friend Mubarak Wakaso amongst others were also present to bid the ex-Ghana international a farewell.

Former Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal FC, Real Madrid and Togo international Emmanuel Adebayor was there to pay tribute and last respect to Atsu.



Atsu lost his life, as a result of earthquake in Turkey and Syria which got him trapped in a two storey building in a 7.7 magnitude of earthquake. After an enigmatic moment of football game for Hatayaspor where he scored the only goal of the game from benched was trapped close to 12-days, only to be confirmed dead on one Saturday morning.

His death arrived as a shock, especially the Ghanaian community and his former clubs because earlier report revealed he was found alive only for Hatayaspor to release the news of his departure.

He left behind a wife, Marie-Claire Rupio and three children, two sons and a daughter with name Abigail Atsu Twasam.



Atsu with the Black Stars made 65 appearance and scored nine goals. He made three AFCON appearance for Ghana and helped the team finish as runners-up at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, in which he also won Player of the Tournament and Goal of the Tournament.

He had stints with FC Porto, AFC Bournemouth, Newcastle United, FC Everton, Malaga and Chelsea FC.
