Former Ghana international Alfred Duncan has finally shed light on why he retired from the Black Stars in 2019, citing a lack of respect from the national team setup.

Duncan, who made his debut for Ghana in a 2016 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Mozambique, managed just nine caps before stepping away from international duty at a time when he was excelling in Europe.

In an interview with Sporty FM, the Fiorentina midfielder explained his decision, stating that he felt undervalued by the national team.

“With the national team, it was complicated because it was my decision to quit. I wasn’t getting the respect I think I deserved,” Duncan revealed.

He added that despite reaching the peak of his career, he did not feel appreciated.

“For a player like me, when I got to the peak of my career, I thought I deserved more respect, which I wasn’t getting enough. I felt it was best to step aside for the young ones or those they believed were right for the team to have the chance to play.”

While he remains one of Ghana’s most accomplished midfielders in European football, his absence from the Black Stars has left many wondering what could have been.
