I developed tough skin after 2008 AFCON game against Namibia – Ghana Legend Asamoah
Former Ghana international Asamoah Gyan has recount moment in his career that made him a tough skin player.
The former Liberty Professionals striker who secured a call-up to the Black Stars at age 17, made his Africa Cup of Nations debut in 2008 when it was hosted in Ghana says the moment of missing a glorious opportunity against Namibia in CAN 2008 is his lowest moment in his career.
Ghana having dispatched Guinea in their opening game, were aiming to whitewash Namibia in their second group game but could only go on with solitary goal from Junior Agogo.
In an empty net, after Namibia goalkeeper had failed to hold onto a ball, Asamoah Gyan was there and expected to finish it but fired wide to the surprise of many.
Missing the opportunity, fans descended heavily on Asamoah Gyan with severe criticism and the next day along with his senior brother Baffour Gyan they left Ghana camp.
Speaking to TV3, the former Sunderland and Al Ain striker said that moment in his career is the lowest. However, it made him develop tough skin.
“Statistically we were ahead. Ghanaians thought we were going to beat them [Namibia] like 20-0. And it was one of those days. I wasn’t lucky. I think I was one of the best players on the field but I wasn’t lucky”
“One opportunity that I got at an acute angle. The goalkeeper fumbled and the ball dropped. The keeper was out and I just hit the ball wide”, the former Ghana captain said.
“And the following day…eii! That was the first time I experienced criticism. So there were just insulting. It was really bad.”
He added; “It made me a strong guy. All my life, I was pampered and that was how I developed that tough skin.”
Gyan who happens to be Ghana’s all-time leading topscorer with 51 goals is currently clubless having parted ways with Legon Cities two years ago.
