The Ghana Football Association (GFA), have confirmed the arrest of Ghanaian footballer Joseph Adjei Oteng for assaulting a Ghanaian referee in a Division Two League game played in Berekum.

The Berekum Divisional Police Command took him up on Friday after receiving complaints from the Regional Football Association. He is now in Police custody ready to be processed to court.

Aside the criminal prosecution, the Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association has also activated disciplinary procedures leading to sporting sanctions as the suspect has been charged for misconduct.

The suspect is alleged to have assaulted Assistant Referee II Patrick Adjei Sarpong in a Regional Division Two League match between Domfete Galaxy FC and Fetentaa Gye Nyame FC played on Wednesday.

According to the match report and other sources of evidence gathered, the player Joseph Oteng Adjei, without any provocation rushed to the Assistant referee immediately after the final whistle and struck him multiple times with a pair of football boots.

The match in question, ended 1-0 in favour of Gye Nyame FC.
