Chris Hughton pays last respect to late Christian Atsu
Newly-installed Black Stars coach Chris Hughton was present at the state House to pay tribute and last respect to late Christian Atsu Twasam whose unfortunate demise occurred in Turkey.
Atsu died in the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquake at age 31 after getting trapped close to 12-days.
On Friday, March 17, 2023 at the fortcourt of Parliament Osu, he was given a state burial having served his country with his talent and philanthropic works.
Former Newcastle United FC, Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur manager who was recently appointed as Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton was at the funeral to pay his last respect to the late Ghanaian international.
At the funeral rite, President of the Republic of Ghana H.E Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, Vice-President Mamud Bawumia, Sports Minister Hon. Mustapha Ussif and other personalities including Reverend Pastors were present to bid farewell to Atsu.
His nuclear family of four thus wife Marie-Claire Rupio and two sons and a daughter who are based in Newcastle were present.
Former Ghanaian footballers such as Sulley Muntari, Yaw Preko, Richard Kingston, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu and delegation from the Ghana Football Association made it to the final funeral rites.
Atsu during his playing days, played for Chelsea FC, AFC Bournemouth, Newcastle United FC, Everton FC, Malaga CF and FC Porto.
He made 65 caps for the Ghana national team, scoring 9 goals and helping them finish as runners-up at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Equatorial Guinea where he won the best player of the tournament and goal of the tournament as well.
