On Tuesday, March 28, 2023, the Black Meteors team led by coach Ibrahim Tanko secured TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations ticket for Ghana.

In what was tagged, a repeat or revenge between Ghana and Algeria ended once again in favour of Ghana at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Ghana stunned Algeria 1-0 in the second leg tie of the qualifiers to settle on a 2-1 aggregate scoreline having drawn 1-1 away.

Youngster Abdul Fatawu Issahaku scored twice goals in two matches, to ensure the West African Country pick a slot to the upcoming TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Ghana in 2019, eliminated Algeria in 2019 but failed to book a ticket to the Olympic Games.

Nevertheless, here come another chance under the watch of Coach Ibrahim Tanko.

According to Spokesperson for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum qualifying for 2024 Olympic Games is long-term target for Black Meteors.

“First of all, we are grateful to Ghanaians for the support. This week has been hectic having two of your top national teams in action,” he told Asempa FM.

“They played a day apart twice. The Black Stars played on Monday and we took off to come to Kumasi to do what is necessary for the Black Meteors.

“I think the long-term target is to qualify for the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games is something that has eluded Ghana since 2004.”

Ghana’s Olympic men’s football team, last played at the Olympics in 2004 held in Athens and has since not ventured after missing out in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

The last time Black Meteors were at the Olympic, they finished at the quarter-finals where they lost 4-2 to South America side Brazil.
