CAS Temporarily Lifts Safo Taylor’s Three-Year Ban, Paving Way for Return to Football
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has provisionally lifted the three-year ban imposed on former Asante Kotoko striker Solomon Safo Taylor by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee.
This decision restores Taylor’s ability to participate in professional football while the case undergoes further arbitration.
The ban, enforced since April 15, 2024, was based on allegations of double registration and document falsification. The GFA Disciplinary Committee ruled against Taylor after a protest by Asante Kotoko highlighted discrepancies in his registration records.
The ruling, which significantly disrupted the 26-year-old forward’s career, was upheld by the GFA Appeals Committee on May 29, 2024. However, Taylor escalated the case to CAS on November 6, 2024, under case CAS 2024/A/10983, leading to the recent provisional decision.
The CAS ruling, delivered on December 4, 2024, and signed by Dr. Elisabeth Steiner, Deputy President of the CAS Appeals Arbitration Division, included several key measures:
- Approval of Safo Taylor’s request for provisional measures.
- Temporary suspension of the three-year ban imposed by the GFA.
- Reinstatement of Taylor’s player license, allowing him to resume his professional football career.
- Deferred determination of costs associated with this interim ruling to the final arbitration award.
The final decision from CAS will determine whether the initial ban imposed by the GFA will stand or be overturned permanently.
