Black Stars did not disgrace themselves in Qatar – GFA Exco member
Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Dr Tony Aubynn believes the Black Stars gave it their all at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, despite falling short of their goal of reaching the semi-finals.
The four-time African champions were eliminated in the first round after losses to Portugal and Uruguay, but a win over South Korea.
Ghana needed a win or a draw against Uruguay in their final group game to qualify, but an Andre Ayew penalty miss and a poor defensive performance resulted in a 2-0 loss, sending the Black Stars packing from Qatar.
“We are out of the World Cup because it’s football, football is an unpredictable game, our players were determined to achieve the set target, likewise other teams were also determined,” he said on Akoma FM.
“On the day, things didn’t go the way we wanted and that is football for you.
“But our exit is not anything strange, much as it is a painful experience for all Ghanaians, Germany and Uruguay who are once champions of the competition all exited with us.
“Before the tournament, Ghana were the least favourite to win the competition.”
“I think the team didn’t disgrace themselves at all, many supporters from different countries appreciated our performance and believed the future looked bright.”
“Even though we were unable to win the competition, we really raised the flag high.”
“Let’s focus on the positives because this team is still young and with time, they will come good,” he added.
Otto Addo resigned as Black Stars coach on Friday, and top GFA officials are said to be deliberating on the next coach.
