Black Meteors head coach Ibrahim Tanko has disclosed that he has no idea why Italian-based forward Felix Afena-Gyan did not turn up for Black Meteors call-up.

The 20-year-old was invited for Ghana’s last hurdle qualifier game against Algeria but failed to honour the call-up as the Black Meteors dispatched Algeria for the TotalEnergies U-23 African Championship ticket.

Ghana defeated Algeria 1-0 to qualify on a 2-1 aggregate to book a place in the finals to be hosted by Morocco.

Speaking on the absence of the Cremonese striker, Ibrahim Tanko revealed that he held talks with the player’s agent who suggested his client isn’t ready to feature for the Ghana U-23 side.

“I did my list and added Afena. I don’t know why he is not here. I personally spoke to his agent about four times and he told me the boy is not ready,” the Black Meteors coach told the press after beating Algeria in Kumasi.

Ghana will compete in the African Cup of Nations U-23 competition slated for later this year and fight for a place to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Olympic men’s football team last played at Olympics Games in 2004 held in Athens but has made six appearance already with their best finish coming in 1992, where they won bronze.
